Writing Prompt #1

I’ve downloaded the ebook from Dailypost.wordpress.com, 365 Writing Prompts. I’m starting in February as opposed to where the book starts with January 1st.

Writing Prompt: Nightmares: Describe the last nightmare you remember having. What do you think it meant?

I don’t really get nightmares, except when I watch scary movies and after having one I believe I’ve just over thought about the movie too much and taken it to heart and I should just stop watching scary movies.

But I do get the odd “Bad Dream” every once in awhile, this one was quite odd. It was about the characters in my novel that I’m writing. I’m at this one place in the novel where I’m writing about my FMC (female main character) finally coming home after she skipped town for a couple of years. And despite writing that she had only a few hitches in her friends and family welcoming her home apparently the whole event when to hell. Her friends hated her and believed her exes story.

Even though it’s only the first draft and I would have done this eventually I think her friends need to be more resistant to let her back into their lives, and not be so accepting of her coming back. After all she did up and leave town in the middle of the night.

Another Update!

I’ve decided that I want to get back into the habit of writing and blogging everyday and while I don’t exactly have all the time in the world I’ve decided that I can squeeze in a half hour everyday if that’s what it takes to get back into a routine. I love writing and blogging, it fuels my creative outlet.

There has been a lack of book reviews this month despite the pile up of books sitting to be read and reviewed. I hit a snag with two books that I was attempting to read and they’ve put me behind severely. I’m terribly sorry, I will try to have another  up within the next week. Possibly on the weekend.

I started up a sims blog yesterday, I got back into playing, actually playing a family versus building and decorating. I started a legacy family. It’s different mostly because I’m not looking to write a story – that’s where I get stuck it seems is telling the story. So my posts will be mostly picture laden with a few words here and there possibly explaining the moments before and after the picture was taken. I’ve also decided not to follow a legacy challenge I just want to see how long I can keep the family going. You can follow it here if you like: Just Another Sims 3 Blog. I’ll be attempting to move all my pages over within the next week.

Snippet of Writing (#1)

This is just a rough unedited scene that I wrote for the novel I’m writing. It’s by no means the best and I understand that, I appreciate any comments and feedback that anyone who has read it wants to give.

Charlie jogged up the back steps of her porch. She stopped when she noted the sliding door was open and music was through the door. Cautiously she slid the screened door open and stepped into the kitchen. Nic stood at her stove, with a pan sizzling on the burner. She stood stunned, not expecting him to be here.
“Hey” he said with a smile turning to look at her.
“Hi” she returned the smile, she walked forward and picked up the water bottle from the island where she had left it. She saw her note, open on the island. “You stayed”
“I did” he said. He turned. “You seem surprised”
“It’s just after last night…”
“Last night wasn’t your fault and you couldn’t have predicted what would happen”
“Still you didn’t have to step up to the plate”
“I wanted to…and I wanted to make you breakfast”
“and now I owe you…twice” she grinned.
“That’s alright” he said. He turned down the volume on the radio and turned to face her. “I hope you don’t mind”
“No” she said shaking her head lightly.
“so, you run?”
“Yes, I try to every day” she replied. She kicked off her running shoes and took a seat at the island, she opened her bottle of water and took a long drink.
“Where?”
“Usually just along the beach, provides good resistance” she glanced up at him “Do you?” She caught her appearance in the reflection off the cooker hood, and noted she looked awful, face flushed gleaming with sweat, and yet if he noticed he didn’t show it.
“Um…hold that thought” she said holding up her hand. “I’ll be right back”
“Okay” he replied. She hopped off her stool, walked over to the back door and picked up her sneakers before walking out of the kitchen and in the direction of the stairs that would take her to the second floor.

Again, it’s not the best. It is rough and unedited but I appreciate any creative feedback and comments.

Writing Resources?

NaNoWriMo is less than a month away. What are your writing resources? Are you a planner or a panster?

I personally have given up on writing in any other program but Microsoft office, I’ve tried Scrivner, YWriter, Storyist, Storybook ect. But I guess it depends on the specific person. I have planned my novel and other novels in Microsofts OneNote and have yet to try and see if it works in Evernote. Before I got the microsoft series Evernote was my go to for pretty much everything. If you’ve read my post on planning then you know the layout I set for my novels…it also depends on if your world building or not. I believe I could get Evernote to work I just haven’t figured out how.

I’m currently looking for a music site, or program other than itunes where I can compile music playlists. I was using youtube but it’s a bit annoying that I can’t set a song on repeat or anything and I dislike itunes. I used youtube the most because some of the songs I don’t have and youtube was a way of listening to them for free. Might just have to bite the bullet and buy the song.

Heres a list of some of my writing resources:

1. NaNoWriMo.org – I frequent the forums ALOT…I do word count shoutouts and talk to other writer’s on there. I also use the adoption forum for dares and plot lines, and even sometimes names.

2. WriteorDie – I don’t use this one as much as i’d like to. I find that even though I want to use it to boost my inspiration that I don’t.

…can’t think of anymore off the top of my head but i’ll update the list when I do.

Are you a planner or a pantster?

As most of you can probably tell I’m a planner…or at least a partial planner. I’ve got a general plot line and knowledge of where I’m starting, a little of whats going on in the middle and where I want to at least end up at the end of it all. What about you?

Novel Planning: Creating a Novel Bible

So the other day I ran across a forum post for something called a novel bible. This really piqued my interest because well probably like most writer’s this is the only thing my organizational mind can’t reach and that’s my writing files on my computer. I’m a clean and organized freak in every other aspect of my life but when it comes to my writing forget about it and most of the time I usually lose a file and what not and I can never find anything. Just this morning I found a whole half novel that I had started writing but thought I lost. It was covered in dust at the bottom of a file folder in something I would have never thought to look in otherwise on my hard drive.
A novel bible or binder if you couldn’t already guess is everything organized into one place for you. It includes everything that you might think you want to put in your future novel. Over the course of the last few days I tried making a hard copy of one, something that wasn’t on the computer but it go really disorganized fast and I was wasting paper which wasn’t something I wanted to do. So then I started thinking of programs I could possibly use to have it electronically. Some people keep it simple and in word or in evernote. Well point blank I highly dislike Evernote and use OneNote instead, and Word was too constricting.
Yesterday I had attempted in Evernote and made a small dent but still got frustrated when it got too confusing and then I realised I was doing it all wrong. It was me being over organizational again.
So instead of having a gizillion little uncatagorized pieces I have my binder organized as follows (it’s all alphabetical which will drive me insane since I want it organized by importance – may yet have a solution to fix that)

Against All Odds Novel Bible
Characters
•Major Characters
•A
•B
•C
•D
•E
•Minor Characters
•F
•G
•H
•I

•A
•B
•C
•D

Pre-Plan
•Rough Plot Ideas
•Rough Timeline of Events
Research
The Plot
•Uncatagorized Scenes
•Time Line
•Chapter One Scenes (Section for each chapter of scenes)
The Sequel – Pre-plan
•Ideas
•Rough Time Line of Events
•Uncatagorized Scenes
•Probable Characters
•Locations

Under each section lets say for character I can have under Character A, a page for each of the following: Photos/Character sketch, And then one for each biography category and anything else. Of all the methods I tried this one was the easiest to work out and set up. Of course the outline above for my catagories may work for myself and not for you. You’ll just have to play with it and find what way works for you.
Anyways I feel with this method I can keep track of my novels. Not to mention OneNote allows you to have many notebooks at once. Unfortunately the program only comes in the Microsoft Office bundle and costs a bunch…though if you’re a student you can get it for free. Totally worth it.
My last post I mentioned that I wanted to plan before I ever attempted NaNoWriMo again or writing at all and well I’m sticking with the program, though I have started writing down some uncatagorized and totally rough scenes when an idea or two has popped into my brain. I feel this method of planning will totally work.
Laters for now,

Happy Writing!
